Fishermen of Astypalea – Photography Exhibition by Julien Guidicelli
The fishermen of Astypalea are among the most romantic elements of island life. As an integral part of tradition, they insist on preserving their professional connection with the sea despite the vast changes of modern times. Defying the odds, they continue a profession full of challenges and demands, offering us their finest catches throughout the year.
For the first time, however, the fishermen of Astypalea became the focus of interest for a French photographer who, since a young age, has chosen the island for his summer holidays — and not only. Julien Guidicelli, who considers Astypalea his second home, spent many hours last September with the fishermen out at sea. He lived alongside them, experiencing all the moments of their demanding daily lives and, naturally, photographed the “ritual” of fishing from beginning to end in his own unique style.
The black-and-white photo collection selected by Julien Guidicelli from the hundreds of shots he captured last autumn will be exhibited in the specially arranged windmill at the central square of Chora from August 1st to 15th, 2018. The opening of this unique photography exhibition is scheduled for Wednesday, August 1st at 9:00 p.m., and both the photographer himself and the fishermen who took part in this artistic endeavor will be present at the exhibition space.
