Pera Gialos, the picturesque port of Astypalaia with its beautiful beach
Pera Yalos is found in a walking distance from Chora. In the present days, the border between the two villages is hardly distinguished, as due to the extensive building activities the whole region is now inhabited and the whitewashed little houses of Pera Yalos are mingled with those located around the Castle and the central square in front of the Mills!
Pera Yalos was the main port of Astypalaia until recently, when a new bigger port was constructed in the area of Ayios Andreas. Boats arriving from islands that are found in a close distance are being docked at the old port. This is where the ship of the local line of Kalymnos is being docked as well. The sailboats are being moored in the little marina which was recently constructed for this exact purpose.
In Pera Yalos you will find a beautiful clean beach covered in marram grass, which – due to its location – is protected by the changing environmental conditions. There, you can take a quick dip and then enjoy traditional coffee or lunch at the little cafés and taverns right above the beach. At the village you will also find the Museum of Astypalaia, where someone can learn about the whole history of the island throughout the centuries via the proficient exhibition of the artefacts that are of great quality and quantity! You should definitely visit the church of St. Nickolas, which is easily noticeable by its pale blue dome.
Many of the public services of the island are also located in Pera Yalos. This is where the only bank of the island is found, along with the coast guard and various spots for refueling the tourist boats which are all close to the port. Additionally, Pera Yalos is where the daily summer boat ventures to the islets around Astypalaia start from. On the big board placed right above the port at the bus station of Pera Yalos you can find information about everything that takes place on the island; from sport activities and day or night events to the public and private transport time-tables and accommodation.
In Pera Yalos you will find many different kinds of accommodation if you chose to stay at the village. Try to walk to Chora following the beautiful and picturesque uphill alleys! The long downslope is certainly the best choice for all those who choose to return to Pera Yalos after their visit to Chora, if they wish to avoid the time gap between the services of the local public transport.
