The view from a high spot fascinates all visitors; especially in our case, as below these high spots lies Chora of Astypalaia, one of the most magnificent cities in the Aegean! Two spots that are worthy of your visit are the mountain of Prophet Elijah, and more specifically the homonymous church that is raised there, and the area of “Paliomylos”.

The little church of Prophet Elijah with its surrounding fence is located right opposite the town of Chora, a bit higher though in altitude, offering a magnificent view of the island’s capital. On your left, you can see Maltezana, while the area of Agios Konstantinos spreads on your right. Access to the area of Prophet Elijah is possible by the road that starts from the central square towards St. John. Then, after approximately 300 metres you should take the left fork and you will reach the church.

If you follow the little pathway that starts behind the church of Prophet Elijah, you will reach the area of Paliomylos after c. 700 metres. There, you will see a traditional mill and a municipal building on the top of which an astonishing view is offered! You can take a break and relax on the concrete benches at the yard of the building and let yourself enjoy the beauty that unfolds in front of your eyes!

Both spots worth your visit! The sunrise and the beautiful sunsets in the middle of the day; an image that will definitely stick in your mind creating a sweet memory of Astypalaia. Whoever prefers the evening adventures should know that the path is not lit. Reaching Paliomylos and the mountain of Prophet Elijah on foot is feasible with relatively minor difficulties. However, in the area of Paliomylos it is always quite windy due to the high altitude.

The Castle of Agios Ioannis in the southwest coast of Astypalaia dates back to the Byzantine times. The construction of the castle coincides with the period of time when piracy was flourishing in the Aegean Sea. The construction of fortresses in locations that were far from the sea or up on hills, was a common measure of protection of the population from the raids of pirates and other enemies. The location of the castle of Agios Ioannis can confirm the aforementioned theory. It was built on the highest spot of the island, above the large homonymous beach which is only accessible by boat or on foot by following the mountain route.

In the Castle of Guerini you will find two churches, the oldest of Agios. Goergios (Glykavli) built in 1790 with its wood temple and The Panagia of the Castle (Evaggelistrias) was built in the mid of 18th century. Panagia of the Castle has carved iconostasis, draped with gold leaf and a sculpted double-headed eagle on the floor. Next to the church you will find a small collection of old pictures.

Both churches are all white as you can see in the photos, with blue dome causing sharp contrast between the houses in Castle. The dome distinguishes them from afar to the visitors eyes, from the beach of Maltezana to Pera Gialos and Livadi from which is visible the wild, yet beautiful Chora of Astypalaia.

During your visit in Chora, worth to visit the Infant Cemetery found in Astypalaia and is unique in the world! You will find it in Kylindra, the lower zone of the Capital. (opposite of Gialos – View to Livadi bay). The area of the Cemetery is fanced and located just below the road that crosses Kylindra.

From archaeological / anthropological point of view the finding is unique, dating back to the Geometric period and was used until the Hellenistic period.

There have been several theories about the creation of this burial site and hundreds entombed infants. Likely to sacrifice to the gods or some great sickness that happened on the island.

In Astypalaia, there are three renowned caves that the alternative traveller can visit.

The Negro’s Grotto in the area of Vatses

In the Negro’s Grotto one can see beautiful and unique formations of stalactites and stalagmites. The cave is part of the tradition of the island as it is widely mentioned in the various myths about pirates and the treasures they were hiding in there. The best way to reach the cave is by following the dirt road that starts from the town of Chora. You should leave your car there and then, continue on foot until you reach the cave which is right on top of the hill. Alternatively, you can access the area where the cave is found by taking one of the little tourist boats that make trips around the island, starting from Pera Yalos – you can definitely ask for this if you are also interested in viewing the sea route.

The Cave of the Dragon, in Vathi

Or otherwise the Dragon Cave. It is located on the northern side of the island, north of the church of Panagia of Thomas. Reaching the cave on foot is a little venturous, as the pathway is fairly dangerous.

Cave of Panagia Poulariani in Analipsi

The church of Panagia Poulariani is built on top of the highest mountain of the island, Kastelano. The rock where the church lies is said to be formed in the shape of Virgin Mary holding Infant Jesus in her arms.

The church of Panagia Portaitissa constitutes the religious centre of the island and the most renowned and visited spot of worship. It started being built in 1762 by Saint Anthimos from Kefalonia, who, despite the fact that he was blind, had previously built the monasteries of Zoodochos Pigi at Sikinos and of Saint George in Kastellorizo. The construction of the church lasted for nine years and, during those years, a plethora of miracles are said to have happened according to religious tradition.
The church is dedicated to Panagia Portaitissa of the Holy Monastery of Iviron. A copy of the icon of Panagia Portaitissa of this monastery at Mount Athos was brought to Astypalaia by Saint Anthimos.

On August 15th, when Panagia Portaitissa is celebrated, a big festival with violins and lutes is held to honour Her. Near the monastery operates the ecclesiastic museum of Astypalaia where rare relics of exquisite art are on display.
